Archu’s Cyberspace…!

{September 29, 2008}   Everyone thinks am a FOOL :|

Well the FOOL part is really true.. ok this is how I come to *everybody* conclusion. I try to check with 3 ppl with varied perspectives and if 3 of them tell same thing abt an issue i consider their opinion as everybody’s opinion. And those 3 ppl were always frm different age groups and different localities and ofcourse as mentioned earlier, perspectives.

So here is wat happened with one of those ppl:

X1: Hey hi.. can u help me in formatting my resume? I have the interview in 2 days

Me: Sure .. send it

X1 sends a doc and waits

Me: Edits the doc, and adds some stuff, make some pointers and mail it back

X1: I cant open the file u mailed me now. It tells “windows cannot find an application to open your file”

Me, remember now that I use openffice. Told him same thing, he gets pissed and goes offline. I open his doc save in .doc format and mail him. He sends a msg telling me tat why am not having/using MS office and jus using some *crap*. To him I looked foolish for not following the trend.

———–

Other 2 incidents were pretty too rude :-S so no bloggin abt them.. Finally me being branded as foolish geek without using windows and people still have the opinion, atleast over here in India that without having Microsoft windows in ur computer, u can’t do any computer related job.

Opensource needn’t be popular, free software needn’t be popular, but the piracy stuff atleast needs some popularity over here. Many of my frends, and ppl around have windows xp or 2000 cd and never did anyone pay for it, unless it comes with laptop. Why so much confusion and illegality, when u hav something more safe and better which comes with very less hassile and u hav ppl around the world helping u.. I still dont understand.

…………….

And I run gnu software in my laptop for the past 2 weeks, and literally no issues with anything, except tat I am yet to configure my wifi thing here. I also intend to not format this stuff for atleast an yr. And here is a sample screenshot..

{September 5, 2008}   In Love with Xterms?

As the test script was still executing and it would take 2 hrs to complete, I was just thinking, what made me sit and watch this scary script .. and I found the answer.. Its the neat solaris xterm and nothing else. I was n love with it, and the way it works perfectly out of box :D

My love to xterms date back to 2004 where I was trying to fix and figure what this tool was. And finally one day I knew all the options for it, and I just love it. Xterms rock big time! That love to xterms made me think abt installing Arch linux n laptop, which is actually packed and kept inside waiting for its keyboard change. May be after the keyboard change there could be OS change too.

{December 30, 2007}   Vista partitioning?

We get a default tool with vista but, irony is that its not user friendly as many MS pdts claim themselves.. ok lets chk whether it works..

I have one primary and one more logical drive. I am able to shrink only the logical, while am not able to do any nonsense with the primary even though i hav loads of GBs left. :(

This pushed me to chk for the diskpart tool which told me the same thing in the command line.. nothing works .. Kind of bugd now.  Thought abt formatting and re-installing the xp prof and get a linux distro goin, but tat too is not possible since I have organised my data perfectly here so re-organising them is simply a pain in … :-X

Already I disable all those flashy stuff so tat i can save some memory, other than tweaking registry which am very weak since it gives some junk results most of the time i tried.

Refrained from formatting, since After getting this laptop, jus was thinking let me see how long am able to run along with vista home basic edition.

I don like this, except for the ease of operation and I can easily tell my parents something, instead of showing them a xfce stuff. No intention to play with partitions since I have really gud data oraganised properly (atleast to me) .. :(

First step is to collect the complete archive from the yahoo group…

Mail man supports mbox format for importing archives. So we got to get the yahoo msgs into a single .mbox file. Which can be done using the simple perl utility yahoo2mbox

To hav this working, we need to have perl installed if u are using windows or mac variants.. as I do .. So I installed Active perl and chked by executing perl in command line.. :) happy things are goin on well till now

Code:

Microsoft Windows [Version 6.0.6000]
Copyright (c) 2006 Microsoft Corporation.  All rights reserved.

C:\Users\archu>perl
print “Arch chking perl”
;
Arch chking perl
C:\Users\archu>

Kool.. Next step is to jus trigger this after downloading yahoo2mbox

Jus give this and wait..

C:\Users\archu\Desktop\yahoo2mbox-0.23>perl yahoo2mbox.pl Indianlc

Keep waiting waiting.. :(

Finally we get something like this after 15-20 mins

C:\Users\archu\Desktop\yahoo2mbox-0.23>perl yahoo2mbox.pl Indianlc
Logging in anonymously… ok.

Getting number of messages in group Indianlc…
Retrieving messages 1..525: ………………Start of message text not found: either <pre> nor <tt> tag found.

<SNIP>

…… done!
Saved 520 message(s) in Indianlc.

C:\Users\archu\Desktop\yahoo2mbox-0.23>

Except for the time it takes, this stuff does a pretty decent job..  Job done..

Now the admin whos having access to the local mailman installation should do the this..

{December 24, 2007}   Linux Chix Wiki & Mail lists :)

Successfully started off the wiki and mail lists.. all credits goes to the fellow mates there Vid and Runa for taking most of the important steps reg the same..

I was quiet – very passive in mail lists.. since I felt some day an year back that I need to know more and was figuring out I was wasting a lot of time jus chking and answering mails from All-Indian lugs, at the end of 2-3 years I found myself no-where jus a mailer for ppl who were lazy to google .. So thought there are others who wil help newbies and  jus felt interested ppl will always learn watever the initial hickups were ..

So linux enthusiasts please join hands with all gals out there.. who love to explore more than the specified boundaries..

{March 30, 2007}   Solaris or Linux?

I was trying to think the pros and cons of both these kids of big daddy *nix .. I came across one stuff that made me think solaris is better.. support.. support frm a better branded company “Sun”. After working for about 1.5 yrs with solaris.. nix daemon in my mind was back frm zombie!

Till Solaris became open solaris, I was bit apprehensive about it, now the doors are really open :)

Green talks lot about the transition that is happening (or expected to happen? ) from linux to solaris..

I don’t agree with green in all his views though.. but his points are really looking similar to the stuff I read long back by some *nix basher.. but this is business world anyways.. Green talks about enterprise and stuff.. no idea abt it since am still now clear about the role of OSS in Enterprise , though I read almost 2 or 3 success stories in each issue of LFY..

This question caught my attention, but I din understand wat Green was trying to convey.. :-S

IC: From a business standpoint, what are the advantages in upgrading from Linux to Solaris?

GREEN: Three advantages come to mind: development time, cost, and reliability. Plus, Solaris brings these advantages without forcing enterprises to sacrifice one for the other. With Solaris, companies can start small with limited complexity, which helps them bring technologies to market quickly. These initial steps can be performed on low-cost hardware — which companies can upgrade over time. And, all of this can be achieved using the same application code base without hidden costs.

{November 5, 2006}   Novell and MS collaborate..!

The image “http://www.novell.com/linux/microsoft/email_header.gif” cannot be displayed, because it contains errors.

This guy Ronald W. Hovsepian President and Chief Executive Officer of Novell Inc announced this on Nov 2nd.. More on the same can be read here

This is wat Ron told .. “Let me begin by quickly outlining what we just announced. Microsoft and Novell, starting today, have agreed to build and market solutions so that Novell’s technology works on Microsoft and vice versa. Specifically, customers will now be able to run virtualized SUSE Linux Enterprise on Windows or Windows on SUSE Linux Enterprise. This landmark agreement also calls for both Microsoft and Novell to provide patent coverage to each others’ customers for our respective products. Why is that important? It’s important because you shouldn’t have to spend a lot of time worrying about legal matters around which operating system to choose. You also shouldn’t have to worry about barriers such as intellectual property agreements, who owns which patent portfolio, and indemnification. None of those issues move your business forward. Now many of those barriers have been removed.”

Lets see how things move..!
